Lilium, GE Aerospace partner to advance eVTOL safety standards

German electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft manufacturer, Lilium, has recently partnered with GE Aerospace to elevate safety standards for the rapidly evolving eVTOL industry.

The alliance aims to create a comprehensive flight data management system to support the safety needs of eVTOL operators as the market prepares for its first commercial flights, with Lilium’s own aircraft, the Lilium Jet, expected to begin customer deliveries in 2026.

Leveraging GE Aerospace’s flight data monitoring and analytics capabilities alongside Lilium’s industry-specific platform, the partnership will develop scalable safety solutions aligned with rigorous standards set by aviation regulators in the US and Europe.

The collaboration will combine GE Aerospace’s Event Measurement System (EMS) platform with Lilium’s Fleet Optimizer to deliver these scalable safety solutions for operators.

“Aviation regulators in Europe and the US are rightly setting the highest bar for eVTOLs to meet in safety standards and regulations,” said Andrew Coleman, General Manager of GE Aerospace’s SaaS Group.

“Together with Lilium, a leader in the eVTOL space, we’re bringing together OEM-level flight data monitoring and quality assurance capabilities of EMS with Lilium’s eVTOL jet-related analytics platform to establish a robust safety foundation for eVTOL industry that will help to accelerate commercial scale adoption of this exciting new technology.”

Comprehensive safety insights

Furthermore, the companies will integrate GE Aerospace’s EMS platform into Lilium’s “POWER-ON” aftermarket program, offering operators a comprehensive suite of digital tools and actionable insights.

These insights will enable Lilium Jet operators to monitor fleet-wide safety and optimise daily operations.

“Flight data monitoring at a fleetwide level is a key component of our aftermarket services offering for operators,” said Dominique Decard, VP of Fleet Operations, Support, and Services at Lilium.

“Collaborating with GE today will allow us to deploy the technology to support our flight test campaign.”

The EMS platform, currently in use by over 60 airlines and 500 business jet operators worldwide, will process data from Lilium’s Fleet Optimizer, allowing both companies to establish a fleet-wide Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) or Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) program.

This programme will support a voluntary FDM option for Lilium customers, ensuring the highest standards for safety as the eVTOL industry takes off commercially.
