UK’s BSI publishes new standards to support drone and eVTOL industry

The British Standards Institute (BSI) has recently released PAS 1905:2024, a new guide designed to support the UK’s growing drone and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) sectors.

The standard provides guidance on aviation regulatory principles, management systems, and assurance frameworks, focusing on the safe integration of emerging aviation technologies into shared airspace.

PAS 1905:2024 is designed to help operators, manufacturers, supply chain partners, and infrastructure providers understand the regulatory requirements and frameworks necessary to scale and industrialise advanced air mobility (AAM) systems.

Additionally, the guide highlights key aspects of the aviation product life cycle, ensuring the safe conduct of routine operations.

In addition to offering a structured overview of aviation systems, the guide directs stakeholders to existing regulations and standards.

The document also addresses a wide range of emerging aircraft and systems under the Future Flight Challenge, including unmanned/uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), and AAM aircraft.

According to BSI, the standard is intended to support new entrants developing or deploying future flight systems, as well as established organisations seeking to expand their operations.

Moreover, it provides practical guidance and examples, making it relevant to a broader audience, including investment and insurance organisations, local authorities, and community groups concerned with the regulation of new aviation sectors.
