ANA Holdings, Joby Aviation Expand Partnership To Launch Electric Air Taxi Services In Japan

ANA Holdings (ANA HD) and Joby Aviation have announced a major expansion of their ongoing collaboration to introduce electric air taxi services in Japan.

The two companies plan to establish a joint venture and deploy over 100 of Joby’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft across the country, beginning with a phased rollout in Tokyo.

This marks a step forward in both companies’ shared goal of transforming urban mobility. By leveraging Joby’s aircraft and ANA’s operational expertise, the collaboration aims to create a new mode of transport that alleviates urban congestion and enhances regional connectivity.

A Step Toward Urban Mobility Transformation

Koji Shibata, President and CEO of ANA HD, described the expanded partnership as “a pivotal step forward” in the airline group’s commitment to addressing Japan’s transportation challenges.

“Air taxi service will directly contribute to addressing Japan’s urban transportation difficulties, ultimately enhancing regional exchange and providing a new, efficient means of travel,” said Shibata.

“Demonstration flights at the Expo are the first step in addressing that challenge. Alongside our partners, we are dedicated to building this future while adhering to the highest safety standards developed by the ANA Group.”

Joby’s eVTOL aircraft, designed to carry a pilot and up to four passengers, can travel at speeds of up to 200 mph (320 km/h) with zero operating emissions and minimal noise.

These features make it well-suited for deployment in densely populated areas, offering a sustainable and time-saving alternative to ground transportation.

Ecosystem Development & Industry Collaboration

As part of the initiative, ANA HD and Joby intend to build a broader air mobility ecosystem. This includes plans for vertiport infrastructure, pilot training programs, and aircraft maintenance support.

Both companies are working closely with national and local governments and other private partners to accelerate the service’s implementation.

Among these partners is Toyota Motor Corporation, which has maintained a longstanding relationship with Joby as both a collaborator and investor.

“Our vision is bold: to build new pathways in the skies and reimagine everyday life,” said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation. “Together with ANA, we’re setting a foundation to do just that–to deliver Joby aircraft and build an entire air transport ecosystem woven into Japan’s vibrant cities.”

Bevirt added that Japan’s mix of technological ambition and cultural heritage makes it an ideal starting point for the company’s vision: “Where ancient wisdom, legendary craftsmanship and soaring ambition converge – that’s Japan. And that makes it an extraordinary launchpad for redefining the future of air mobility.”

Public Demonstration Flights At Expo 2025 Osaka

To showcase the capabilities of Joby’s aircraft, the company will conduct public demonstration flights at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, from October 1 to 13. These piloted operations will include vertical takeoffs, transitions to wingborne flight, and landings at the Expo venue in western Osaka City.

The aircraft will appear in a special ANA livery during the demonstrations, representing the companies’ commitment to integrating air taxis into Japan’s transportation landscape. Additional details about the flight schedule and viewing opportunities will be released closer to the event.
